Animal Shelter Adoption Terms of Agreement

When you visit the Prince William County Animal Shelter and select your new pet, the Animal Shelter staff will prepare a contract for your signature that contains your name, address and telephone number, applicable fees and pertinent information about the animal.

The contract contains the following terms of agreement:
  • You agree to take your new pet to a licensed veterinarian for an initial veterinary office visit and health examination.
  • You agree to have your new pet spayed or neutered within a specified amount of time.
  • You will be eligible for a refund of fees paid to the County if the animal dies due to illness within twenty-one (21) days of the date of the contract.
  • You will be eligible for a refund of fees paid to the County if the animal becomes sick and, upon a veterinarian's recommendation, is returned to the Prince William County Animal Shelter within twenty-one (21) days of the date of adoption.
  • You agree, in accordance with the law, to have your new pet -- if it is a dog -- vaccinated against rabies at the age of four (4) months; to purchase the appropriate dog license tag for the County of city of residence; and to attach the dog tag to the collar that the dog must wear at all times.
  • You agree, in accordance with the law, to have your new pet -- if it is a cat -- inoculated against rabies at the age of four (4) months.
  • You agree to feed your new pet each day, have drinking water available at all times, and furnish a weather-proof animal house or adequate animal bedding in your home.
  • You agree to keep your new pet on your property, or within your control, at all times.
  • You agree to allow agents of Prince William County to investigate the animal's home at reasonable times and upon reasonable notice.
  • You agree to NOT sell, trade or give away your new pet. If at any time you can no longer care for the animal, you agree to return it to the Prince William County Animal Shelter. ANIMALS CANNOT BE ADOPTED AS GIFTS.
  • You agree to NOT use the animal for research purposes.
  • You declare that there are no restrictions regarding pet ownership at your place of residence that would prohibit the keeping of your new pet at that residence.
  • You acknowledge that if your new pet is not spayed or neutered by the specified date, the spay/neuter fee paid to the Prince William County Animal Shelter will be forfeited to Prince William County.

In addition, each adopter states that he or she has not been convicted of a charge of, or related to, cruelty to animals -- and that no such charge against him or her is currently pending.

The Prince William County Animal Shelter reserves the right to repossess the animal in the event of misrepresentation of any facts given by the adopter to the animal shelter; if the animal's home is found to be injurious to the health, safety, or welfare of the animal; or the adopter fails to comply with any of the provisions of the contract.

STERILIZATION OF THIS ANIMAL IS REQUIRED UNDER ARTICLE 1, SECTION 3.1-796.126:2 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA. A PERSON WHO VIOLATES THIS ARTICLE IS SUBJECT TO CIVIL PENALTY. THE NEW OWNER MAY BE COMPELLED TO COMPLY WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ARTICLE.
